per grazia ricevuta

Ex voto in a chapel dedicated to San Giuseppe Moscati, a doctor who, next to healing the sick in a more conventional manner, is also said to have performed miracles of the religious kind on his patients. The chapel was itself miraculously saved from a full hit during the WWII air raids on the city.

san francesco saverio

He looks tired, trying to escape from his glass display case in vain. Perhaps he is dreaming of the far, faraway lands he visited once?

out of the darkness

An altar in a side street in the Quartieri Spagnoli. The neighbourhood is so dense, and so dark that even the Holy Virgin needs illumination

falso prete

While I was taking this photo, an African guy selling fake bags came up to me and hissed at me in messed-up Italian, saying that I was a bad person...hope he was a false priest as well

sant'antonio

If the statue of the Virgin Mary was somewhat eerie, Sant'Antonio can only be described as 'gleeful'

ave Maria gratia plena

A rather eerie Virgin Mary. But then again, this might not come as a surprise in a city where they worship San Gennaro's holy blood

guglia dell'immacolata in piazza gesu nuovo

Presumably, when seen in a certain light, from a certain angle, you will see an image of Death instead of that of the Virgin...Also, check out the article about the Guglia on the website of Vrij Nederland magazine

spaccanapoli, the street towards redemption

Spaccanapoli, leading you towards redemption on Montesanto. Napoli is the true city of god, its neighbourhoods called Montesanto, Montecalvario, Montedidio

side street in spaccanapoli

Post-industrial wastelands, failed modernist utopias and inner city decay all feature heavily in my favorite city: Napoli

banksy in napoli

Well, I guess this sort of sums it all up: decay and the influence that violence, fear and religion can have on the built environment....
